Jennifer is an Editor on the BMC Series based in the London office. Before joining BMC Pulmonary Medicine, Jennifer completed her PhD within the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge. After graduating, Jennifer became a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Royal Veterinary College in London. Throughout her research career, she studied the role of epigenetic and inflammatory mechanisms underlying cell behaviour changes associated with vascular disease. Jennifer actively supports the publication of open and reproducible research.

Dr. Hersh is a physician-scientist in the Channing Division of Network Medicine and Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He completed medical school, internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. This was followed by a clinical fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at HMS and a research fellowship in respiratory epidemiology and genetics at BWH. His research integrates the tools of genetics, genomics and epidemiology to improve precision in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He is a co-investigator in the multi-center COPDGene Study, and he is the Principal Investigator of several genomics ancillary studies. He started as an Associate Editor for BMC Pulmonary Medicine in 2013 and became Section Editor for COPD and Occupational Lung Disease in 2016.
Fabrizio Luppi is associate professor and honorary consultant at the Department of Respiratory Diseases at the University of Milan-Bicocca, based at the “S. Gerardo” Hospital in Monza (Italy). Professor Luppi received his medical degree from the University of Modena in 1993. He spent part of his PhD program in the Department of Pulmonology at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands, working on epithelial cell involvement in smoking-induced lung diseases. Prof. Luppi’s primary research interests include interstitial lung diseases, particularly Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and sarcoidosis, and he has been the Principal Investigator in several Phase II and III trials in IPF. Prof. Luppi has published more than 100 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and is a Senior Editorial Board Member of BMC Pulmonary Medicine.
Michele Mondoni is Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine at the Pulmonology Unit of ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo in Milan (Italy) and is Adjunct Professor of the Specialisation School in Respiratory Diseases of the University of Milan. He graduated from the University of Milan in 2002 and received his II Level Master Degree in Interventional Pulmonology and Pulmonary Immunopathology at the University of Parma in 2011. His main areas of expertise are interventional pulmonology and interstitial lung diseases. His primary research interests include clinical and interventional pulmonology. He joined the Editorial Board of BMC Pulmonary Medicine in 2018 and has been a Senior Editorial Board Member since 2020.
Dr. Giovanni Sotgiu is a professor of Medical Statistics and Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Sassari, Italy. He received his medical degree specializing in "Infectious Diseases and Medical Statistics". His doctoral research was on “Methodology of Clinical Trials”. He also received his executive master's in "Management of Health and Social Care Organizations". He is currently a Fellow of European Respiratory Society. The focus of his research is on patient care, primary and secondary prevention, and population health. In particular, his research interests include the clinical and public health features of every respiratory infectious disease (e.g., tuberculosis). He collaborates with the WHO, ECDC, US-CDC, and other international societies. He joined the Editorial Board of BMC Pulmonary Medicine in 2013 and is now the Section Editor of Infectious, Rare and Idiopathic Pulmonary Diseases.
Giulia Maria Stella graduated in Medicine and Surgery (110/110 cum Laude) in 2001. She obtained her MD European Qualification in 2002 and specialized in Respiratory System Diseases (50/50 cum laude). Giulia completed her PhD in Pharmacological Sciences (University of Pavia Medical School) and her master's degree in Molecular Oncology (110/110 cum laude). Dr Stella is now working as a Clinical Research Assistant within the Pulmunology/Thoracic Oncology Unit at Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia. Giulia also works as a Contract Professor for Respiratory System Diseases at the University of Pavia Medical School. Dr Stella has expertise in numerous laboratory techniques, including DNA cloning, sequencing, PCR, mammalian cell culture, transient and stable transfection, single-cell dilution, use of inducible promoters, virus production and cellular transduction (infection with retrovirus and lentivirus), western immunoblotting and protein kinase assay. Dr Stella also has clinical expertise in invasive procedures (bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, lymph node biopsy, thoracentesis and paracentesis) and lung cancer management.
Dr Alice Turner graduated from the University of Leicester and has done postgraduate training via the University of Dundee, the University of Birmingham, and Ashridge-Hult business school. Dr Turner completed a PhD on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) and has further postgraduate qualifications in medical education, leadership and quality improvement. She is now a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Birmingham. In addition, Dr Turner works as a consultant in Respiratory Medicine at Heartlands Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where she leads COPD and AATD services, respectively. In addition, Dr Turner is a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) research prioritisation committee. She also has experience on a National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) health technology appraisal committee. Dr Turner has published widely in COPD and AATD and has ongoing research projects, mainly clinical trials and observational clinical studies, on AATD and COPD funded by the NIHR and others.
